This charming little panel, not signed or dated, depicts a very popular subject in Dutch 17th century painting. Possibly the painting is not signed because it seems not quite finished in certain passages. The subject and execution point to a Leiden school work, possibly an artist in Metsu's circles. Dendrochronology shows the panel most likely was painted from 1641 onwards.
