For the first time, the entire Old Masters collection will be on exhibit, starting on July 11th at the Wallraf Richartz Museum & Fondation Corboud in Cologne, Germany. The exhibition will show all 48 old masters in the collection and a German language catalogue in full colour describing all works will be available.

For the exhibition in Cologne, Dutch Design office concrete architectural associates bv has designed a modern interior in which the collection will be exhibited. The idea is to show the public that 300+ year old paintings fit very well with today’s designs for living space.

The Kremer Collection at the Wallraf

It is not rare for people to dream of calling a real Rembrandt their own, because the Dutch painter has attained mythical status the world over. But his fellow countryman George Kremer is one of the very few who has actually realised this "boy`s dream". Rembrandt's "Bust of an Old Man with Turban" is one of the highlights of his outstanding collection from the "Golden Age" of Netherlandish painting, which also features such masters as Gerrit Dou, Frans Hals, Pieter de Hooch, Hendrick ter Brugghen, Gerrit van Honthorst and Michael Sweerts.

With "Rembrandt, A Boy`s Dream", the Kremer Collection will be shown for the first time in its entirety in a dedicated exhibition. For this the Wallraf has dispensed with the typical approach of grouping paintings by genre or school, and come up with a surprise that bridges the centuries: the celebrated design office concrete in Amsterdam has custom made an ultra-modern, exhibition space specially for the show. So now the old Netherlandish masters will be brought face to face with the hippest side of Holland.

The Kremer Collection (www.thekremercollection.com) is conceived of more along museum lines, and has less to do with with a fashionable taste. Such that the last self-portrait by Adriaen Hanneman is no less at home in the collection than Gerrit van Honthorst's "St Peter Doing Penance" or Rembrandt's "Bust of an Old Man with Turban". In just thirteen breathtakingly short years, the Kremers have brought together no fewer than 48 such masterpieces. Their goal was and is to create and preserve a collection of paintings that will awaken and foster enthusiasm for the Dutch and Flemish schools of the 17th century.

Die Sammlung Kremer im Wallraf

Einen echten Rembrandt sein eigen nennen zu können, davon träumen viele, denn der holländische Maler ist ein weltweit bekannter Mythos. Sein Landsmann George Kremer ist einer der wenigen, der sich diesen Traum, seinen persönlichen „Jugendtraum", erfüllen konnte. Rembrandts „Alter Mann mit Turban" ist ein Highlight seiner hochkarätigen Sammlung von Bildern aus dem „Goldenen Zeitalter" der Niederlande. Sie vereint weitere Meister wie Gerrit Dou, Frans Hals, Pieter de Hooch, Hendrick ter Brugghen, Gerrit van Honthorst oder Michael Sweerts.

Mit „Rembrandt, ein Jugendtraum" ist die gesamte Sammlung Kremer zum ersten Mal im Rahmen einer Sonderausstellung zu sehen. Für die Präsentation wählte das Wallraf keine gewöhnliche museale Hängung nach Gattung oder Schule, sondern überrascht mit einem Brückenschlag über die Jahrhunderte: Eigens für die Schau hat das renommierte Amsterdamer Designbüro concrete ein topmodernes Ausstellungsinterieur entworfen. Die alten niederländischen Meister treffen also auf das hippe Holland von heute.

Die Sammlung Kremer (www.thekremercollection.com) ist eher museal geprägt und weniger durch ueblichen privaten Geschmack beeinflusst. So gehört das letzte Selbstbildnis von Adriaen Hanneman ebenso zur Sammlung wie der „Büßende Petrus" von Gerrit van Honthorst oder der „Alte Mann mit Turban" von Rembrandt. In der atemberaubend kurzen Zeit von nur dreizehn Jahren trugen George und Ilone Kremer bis heute 48 Meisterwerke zusammen. Ihr Ziel war und ist die Schaffung und der Erhalt einer Gemäldesammlung, die die Begeisterung für die niederländische und flämische Malerei des 17. Jahrhunderts wecken und bewahren soll.

• Ode to Coorte (details)

From February 23 - June 8, 2008 an exhibition of the works of Adriaen Coorte (active in Amsterdam and Middelburg, c. 1683-1707) was held in the Mauritshuis, The Hague. During the exhibition approximately 35 of the most important works were shown, out of a total of approximately 80 known works, signed and dated between 1683 and 1707. A richly illustrated catalogue was published, separately in Dutch and English. Essays addressed the development of Coorte's oeuvre, the iconography and the renewed appreciation for his work. All exhibited works were published in colour and a catalogue raisonne of the oeuvre was included in the catalogue. We participated with a recent acquisition, Mountainous landscape with ducks.
